Have a peek through the looking glass into the curious world of Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" where nothing is quite what it seems...
Here are a virtual stage model and costume sketches made for an international directing competition. The competition aimed at selecting the best artistic concept for opera “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, to be staged as a new production in the 2022 / 2023 Season.

"Les Contes D'Hoffmann", or The Tales of Hoffmann is an opéra fantastique by Jacques Offenbach. The staging concept was created with Lithuanian stage director Karina Novikova and has the topics of a burned out artist, split personalities, layers of a personality and idealized/demonized women at its core.
The design brings us to the world of constant slipping from reality to fantasy and is inspired by the poetic images in the writings of Sigmund Freud.

"We have chosen to portray Hoffman as a successful editor, who has started to lose the high-pressure game. In order to stop his mental state deteriorating, Nicklausse steps in as a Hoffmann’s long-term psychoanalyst."
